There are so many different types of stress in life. All of them can influence your mental and physical health as well. Anxiety, depression, anger, resentment all are because of excessive stress, and it contributes to depression. However, you should never ignore stress as it directly impacts the mental & physical health of a person. All of these are important to address for your overall well-being. In this blog post, we will discuss the different types of stress that can negatively impact our lives & how to cope with them better.
What Is Stress?
Stress isn’t always bad. Stress is a reaction the body gives to any kind of demand. It can be due to anything, mental or physical, and even emotional. Short-term stress can improve your performance.
Types Of Stress
Extensively, there are four types of stress:
- Acute Stress
- Episodic Acute Stress
- Chronic Stress
- Post Traumatic Stress
Acute Stress
Acute stress is the body’s reaction to a short-term need or change. This kind of stress can last from minutes, hours, days, and even weeks. The course depends on how long you are in an extreme situation. Acute stress happens when we need to fight off danger. A person suffering from acute stress shows symptoms like tensed muscles, tension, chest pain, increased heart rate, sweating, anxiousness, fear, feeling helpless, panic, irritability, distraction.
Episodic Acute Stress
People who frequently suffer from acute stress tend to be suffering from episodic acute stress, it is your body’s response to a single stressful event. Episodic or time-limited stress can be short or long-term and can involve physical danger. People who make unrealistic, unwanted, illogical demands are likely to be suffering from episodic acute stress. Symptoms of episodic acute stress generally settle within about 30 minutes. However, symptoms will return if you do not find a way to control your emotional reaction. The most common symptoms of this kind of stress are muscle tension in the back, shoulders, and neck, rapid heartbeat, or dry mouth. Primary Causes of episodic acute stress are traffic accidents, work stress, sudden change in life, health issues like surgery, or treatment. However, if you are suffering from a high level of stress then Cognitive-behavioral therapy, Interpersonal therapy, high breathing, and meditation can help you cope up with the episodic stress.
Chronic Stress
Chronic stress occurs when a person has suffered from emotional stress for a while. This can put your health at risk & can create confusion in your mind. The main reason you are suffering from chronic stress is that you put a lot of pressure on yourself. Chronic stress can contribute to serious mental health issues & other physical issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, digestion problems, and even heart disease. Muscle tension in the back, neck, and shoulders is the most common in every type of stress but in chronic stress, you will find difficulty in sleeping.
Eating a healthy diet and staying active with sweet sleep at night helps prevent chronic stress. Supporting friends and family can also help you to improve your mental health.
Post Traumatic Stress
This mental condition is known as the most dangerous type of stress. It can develop after experiencing a shocking, scary, or traumatic event. People suffering from the post-traumatic disorder have symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, and extreme anxiety, & rebellious thoughts.
These symptoms of this stress can be classified into 3 stages
- The first stage occurs within two days of the traumatic event. It’s called hyperarousal.
- The second stage takes place when you experience repeated flashbacks & nightmares of incidents when people around you trigger reminders of the trauma.
- Ultimately, the third stage is when you isolate yourself from everyone who reminds you of those memories.
If you are encountering symptoms of PTSD, it is crucial to seek treatment without any further delay.
